How much should you spend on an engagement ring?

Updated 22 October 2026. 8 sources, listed at the end.

Short answer

Spend what you can pay in cash without touching your emergency savings. For scale: the average US engagement ring cost $4,600 in 2025 1, and in 2024 one in three buyers spent under $3,000 2.

What people actually spend

Couples who married in 2025 spent an average of $4,600 on the engagement ring, according to The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study 1. The year before, The Knot's separate Jewelry & Engagement Study put the average at $5,200 2. The two studies use different samples, so read the drop as a direction rather than an exact change.

An average hides the shape of the spending. In 2024 2:

Ring budgetShare of buyers
Under $3,00033%
Under $6,00064%
$10,000 to $14,9998%
$15,000 or more5%

So a typical buyer spends less than the headline number. A few very large purchases pull the average up.

Budget from savings, not salary

The salary rule tells you what a diamond advert once suggested, not what you can afford 7. A savings budget is more useful and easier to defend:

  1. Start with cash you have now. Leave your emergency fund alone.
  2. Add what you will save before the proposal. Three months of saving at a steady rate is a real number. Three months of salary is not.
  3. Set a hard cap and tell the jeweller. Shops are good at showing you the next stone up.

Fidelity calls the salary benchmark a marketing campaign and recommends paying from savings rather than debt 4. In a 2026 survey of 2,000 US adults by insurer Jewelers Mutual, people who set the budget by their own comfort, not an outside benchmark, reported the most confidence in the purchase and the least money stress 3. About one in three proposers took on debt for the ring in 2024 2.

How the salary rule compares

Full-time US workers had median earnings of $1,232 a week in the third quarter of 2026 6, about $5,339 a month. The 2025 average ring of $4,600 is a little under one month of that. Two months would be about $10,700 and three months about $16,000. Both are above what 87% of buyers spent in 2024, since only 13% spent $10,000 or more 2.

Where the money goes now

Lab-grown diamonds have changed what a budget buys. In 2025, 61% of engagement ring centre stones were lab-grown, and the average centre stone was 1.9 carats 5. The Knot's 2025 figures put the average lab-grown ring at $4,300 and the average natural diamond ring at $7,000 8. If you want a bigger stone for the same money, lab-grown is the main lever. If resale value or a mined stone matters to you, plan for the higher natural price. The lab-grown vs natural guide has the per-carat numbers.

Questions people ask

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

An amount you can pay without debt and without emptying your emergency fund. The 2025 US average was $4,600 1, but most buyers spend less than the average: in 2024, 64% spent under $6,000 and 33% under $3,000 2.

What is the rule for engagement ring price?

There is no real rule. The two or three months of salary idea comes from diamond advertising 7, and The Knot advises ignoring it 2. Budgeting from savings works better.

What is the traditional amount to spend on an engagement ring?

Tradition points to one to three months of salary, depending on which advert you trace it to 7. In practice the 2025 average of $4,600 1 is a little under one month of US median full-time pay, about $5,339 a month 6.

Do engagement ring calculators work?

They give a starting range, not a verdict. Ours multiplies your monthly salary by the months you choose, then adjusts for custom design and insurance. Check the result against your savings before you shop.

Is it okay to spend less than the average?

Yes. The average is pulled up by a small group of big spenders: in 2024, 13% spent $10,000 or more 2. A third of buyers spent under $3,000 2.
